After careful consideration and a lot of research, I picked a camera for my journey: The Sony a6000. This is a “mirrorless” camera, considered the next generation in digital camera technology, following the DSLR trend of the late 2000’s/ early 2010’s. What does that mean exactly? In layman’s terms, the Sony a6000 is a light, compact, powerful camera that shoots HD video and boasts over 24 megapixels at 11 shots per second. It outperforms much of the DSLR market while maintaining a small format ideal for travel. I’m hoping that it ends up being a beast on the trail, and I can’t wait to take it along on the trip. It has also bankrupted me for the near future.
I took a few test shots with the a6000 around the house and at Bidwell Park with my sister and her boyfriend. As you can see from the sample images below, the image quality is phenomenal – far beyond anything an iPhone or point and shoot camera could take. None of these photos are edited or filtered in any way. This is just the camera working at its base-level performance.
Really exciting! Things are coming together for this trip. I’m stoked. More to come.
Cheers,
Rob
