It is an absolutely beautiful, bluebird day here in Oregon, which makes it kind of an ironic day to visit one of the most iconic sites in horror movie history. That’s right, today I went to the Overlook Hotel from the movie The Shining! …well, sort of. You see, most of The Shining was filmed in studios. There is no Overlook Hotel. But the exterior shots of the hotel were from this place here: the Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood!
I’m not going to lie, I have been really excited to go here ever since I first started planning this trip! The Shining isn’t just my favorite horror film of all time, but it’s definitely on the top 10 list of my favorite movies of all time. I don’t know why, but the film just entrances me! And yes, I have watched Room 237 and gotten into all of the conspiracy theories surrounding this legendary film.
I even found the perfect shirt for the day! That’s right, Danny Torrence’s Apollo 11 shirt!

So to set the stage, the approach (queue the intro music to the movie – dun dun dun dun):

Dun dun dun dun

And then I was there! It was kind of underwhelming though, because like many things during this Covid trip, the place was only open to skiers and people staying at the lodge. So I didn’t get to go inside. 😦 The good news is that unlike Astoria that was kind of pretentious and not into my Goonies shirt, people here were pretty cool and I even got a thumbs up or two out of people. Yeah!

After my time up Mt. Hood, I came back to the resort I’m staying at in Silverton to tour its sprawling gardens. So here are a bunch of pictures of plants together with my badge of approval or disapproval of the scenery:

Anyways, that about does it for my time in the Silverton area. Tomorrow I’m off to Bend to see the very last Blockbuster Video on planet earth!
Cheers,
Rob
